Design Competence



Organizations—private, public and governmental—are created to serve the needs and interests of clients, constituents, and stakeholders. An organization’s ability to be successful and sustainable in today’s environment of rapid and complex change, where people and events are connected ever more globally, depends on their being design competent. Business as usual is not an option.

Predicting and preparing for possible futures is not an option. Success and sustainability is not even a matter of being more creative or innovative if that is the only focus. Success and sustainability depends on an organization’s ability to react successfully to changing conditions but more importantly depends on its ability to create the kinds of changes required for it to grow and thrive. 

This means that people must be able to design new organizations, redesign existing organizations and design high value services or products. This means that people and organizations must be design competent if they are to be successful and sustainable in today’s conditions.
